CODEY and SCANLY: Origins

           Once upon a time, there was an unassuming QR code named Codey, who lived happily nestled within the pages of a comic book. Codey spent his days zipping from page to page linking readers to trivial, yet awesome, multimedia gimmick content. He loved nothing more than being scanned by people, who were delighted to discover unexpected stuff. But comfort led to a rut, he started thinking - why should I link to stuff? Why can't I be the stuff that people link to?

For days and days Codey wished upon a glitch to be more than what he was. One day, while being scanned, something happened. To the amazement of a reader named ‘You’, QR Codey suddenly transformed into a real boy and lept off the page with glee! Maybe it was a printing error, perhaps digital compression had fudged his QR or maybe, just maybe... Codey was destined by storybook magic to have his dream come true. Either way You didn’t mind, in fact, You were so excited that You subscribed and told all your friends about Codey.

At the time of Codey’s transformation, it just so happened You were out in public and other people, well… they cacked themselves. But no worries, Codey’s adventure had begun, and the first step in his epic quest was… work out what kind of adventure lay ahead. Then suddenly!! Codey slumped to the ground. The silly QR code forgot that he didn't know how to be a real boy, up till now he was but a machine-readable array of black and white squares forming a numerical matrix. While being chased by scared people who witnessed a QR code gain sentience, Codey quickly learned how to walk (and run), and talk (and scream), and dress himself, and soon, Codey set out on his journey.

           You scanned Codey one last time before setting him on his way. Codey was a curious QR, his mind buzzing with thoughts of exploration and anticipation of meeting other codes. Everywhere he went, people were surprised to see a QR code come to life, often Codey had to answer questions about himself and his origin. To mix things up he'd try different ways to explain the story by rearranging his code which, to his surprise, he could change at will.

 

But explaining your past isn’t the same as living your adventure, Codey thought to himself. At first thought his destiny was to entice people to subscribe to stuff, but knew he was so much more.

 

It wasn’t too long before Codey met Scanly, another QR code come to life.
